In an effort to improve security and offer better customer service, PSU is changing the process to reset lost or forgotten passwords. Your myPlymouth username and password gives you access to use a broad selection of resources at PSU; however the current mechanism used to assign the initial password and to reset the password is based on sensitive information. In our ongoing efforts to limit the use of sensitive information we’re developing a new mechanism to assign initial passwords and reset existing ones.

The new process relies on email instead of sensitive information, and will allow you to reset your password at any time, not just during the hours the help desk is open. Should you ever need to reset your password, you can click a button on the myPlymouth login screen, enter the off-campus email address that you’d previously registered with us, and the system will send an automated email message to that address with a special one-time code that will allow you to reset your password.

New users will register their off-campus email address at the time of initial account creation; we’ll be asking current users to register their off-campus email address in myPlymouth starting Monday, April 13, 2009.

Why use email?

The new process follows the best practices of popular and trustworthy internet services. Email addresses are an aspect of our identity, and most people have an email address before they come to PSU. Further, the process is well understood and accepted by security experts as a safe mechanism to establish identity and reset passwords in electronic networks.

Why do I need to provide an off-campus email address?

If you’ve forgotten your myPlymouth password it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to read your PSU email to get the special password reset message.

Are you eliminating my PSU email?

No. Your @plymouth.edu email address and myPlymouth will still be the institution’s primary means of electronic communication with you.

What if somebody else knows my off-campus email address and tries to reset my password?

Resetting a password requires two things: knowledge of a registered off-campus email address, and the ability to read the messages sent to that address. It is important that you maintain the security of your off-campus email account just as you would your myPlymouth account.

My family shares a home email address, can I use that?

Anybody who can access the off-campus email address that you register with us will be able to reset your myPlymouth password. It is important that you maintain the security of your off-campus email account just as you would your myPlymouth account; please do not use a shared email address for this.

I don’t have an off-campus email address, what do I do?

Now is the perfect time to get one. Services like Google Mail and Yahoo! Mail are free, and don’t forget that your home ISP probably offered you an email address as well.

I can’t give you a secure off-campus email address.

That’s okay. You’ll still be able to reset your password by coming to the help desk and showing a picture ID.

Update: Banner back online. After 24 hours of constant work by the DBAs (+Matt), the Oracle 10g
upgrade to Gandalf effecting PSC1, R25, TRNG, and IRANDA has completed successfully!

However, there are a couple caveats…
– TRNG will not be recreated until tomorrow after the first nightly backup of PSC1 occurs.
– IRANDA will not be upgraded until Monday (sorry Scott, Bill needed sleep)
– TEST is still stale, last created on 6/13. JG will be working to get this back in sync this week.

Thanks all for the testing, especially with the second round repeat…

Although last weekend’s upgrade to myPlymouth was successful, there is one last patch to apply to the Banner Services located in myPlymouth. Therefore ITS will be taking Banner Services down beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 27 through late afternoon on Saturday, June 28.

myPlymouth, Blackboard/WebCT, and Email will not be affected and WILL remain available during the upgrade.

Banner INB, Banner Self-Service and the Banner Courtyard will NOT be available. This includes access to Personal information, Alumni and Friends, Student & Financial Aid, on-line Course Registration, Course Query, and Faculty Access for advising and on-line grade submission

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you can plan your work accordingly. If you have trouble accessing something you think should be available, or if you have any questions about this upgrade, please contact the Help Desk at 603-535-2929.

ITS has just released a new role for students in the application process. In the past, applying students needed to interact with Admissions, Financial Aid and eventually the Registrar’s Office. However, this was not a smooth process, and it frequently involved phone calls and transfers to each department. In order to streamline this process, applying students are now able to log into myPlymouth.

The version of myPlymouth that applicant students log into is specifically designed for them, and is a truncated version of what a registered students sees. This provides Admissions, Financial Aid and the Registrar’s Office with a single point of contact for applicant students. The applicant student role includes a channel for admissions as well as a channel for Financial Aid and a list of important dates for prospective students. This single point of access simplifies the process both for applicant students as well as for the departments that interact with them.

Applying students can now check the status of their admission application, their financial aid application, double check deadline dates, check out what is going on in Student Life and read up on PSU news and much more all from this new portal.

From a customer service standpoint, the applicant student role is much easier to support. A consultant on the phone with an applying student can see much of the same things, making it easier to walk students through features. Helping students find their forgotten PIN numbers is now consistent throughout the offices, and something the help desk can do instead of forwarding the applying student to another department. This also makes the transition from applicant student to registered student much smoother. Students will log into the same system and simply have more features once they become an a registered student. myPlymouth has become the system that students use from the time they apply to their interactions as an alumnus.

The MIS team worked hard to get this new role released as soon as possible. They are continuing to develop features, so if you have any feedback about the applicant student role, and the services provided to them through the portal, they would love to hear it!

By now, everyone should have received the 2007 Campus Directory. In addition to the printed directory, the university also maintains the PSU online Directory Search (located in myPlymouth) and the Voice Activated Directory system (dial 3333).

All three of these directories (print, electronic and voice) utilize the information contained in Banner Self Service. ITS and Human Resources encourage you to review and update your Personal Information annually or whenever you move or change positions.

Changing your directory information:

1. Login to myPlymouth;
2. Select Services tab on the top of this screen;
3. Select Personal Information under Banner Self-Service channel;
4. Update all three Address Types as needed to reflect current directory information.

Departmental information corrections for next year’s directory should be sent to networking@plymouth.edu.

New This Year: The Campus Directory contains a section on Safety Information. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this important information.
